Glad news for all smartphone users yearning for ultra fast transfer speed! Samsung Electronics Co Ltd., has finally unveiled its next generation memory, the LPDDR3 DRAM chip for ultra portable devices. News about the completion of its development was announced by the company in September 2011. This new chip was unveiled during the recent International Solid-State Circuits Conference 2012 held at San Francisco. According to reports, this chip is built to draw only 1.2V of power and also provide transfer speed to upto 6.4 Gigabits per second (Gbps) when compared to its predecessor, LPDDR2. RAM chips that are built with higher data transfer rates will be mainly fitted on smartphones to handle high definition video and games.

With the introduction of LPDDR3 DRAM chips, a remarkable achievement has been made in smartphone industry with its lower power consumption rate. Despite several developments that have been happening in smartphone industry nothing much has been done to improve the power of smartphone battery. On LPDDR3 DRAM’s introduction, smartphone companies will be benefited in lowering the power consumption of smart phone components and thereby will help in gaining maximum out of its batteries. This would not require battery to be made bigger, instead it can be built small enough to fit inside powerful smartphones.

When will this be available in the market?

According to reports, Samsung will ship this new RAM chip model to all smartphone manufacturers during the start of Q2 this year (2012). Also, it is expected that LPDDR3 DRAM chips will find its place in smartphone devices by the end of next year. So, it’s now our turn to wait for its release and be free from worries.

Details of LPDDR3 DRAM chip

LPDDR3 SDRAM chip is manufactured using 30nm process technology and comes with a capacity of 4Gbits. The maximum transmission rate of data per terminal is 1.6 Gbps. It is built with a power supply voltage of 1.2V. The maximum data transmission rate of the entire chip comes to 6.4Gbps with bus width of 32bits. The chip area of LPDDR3 SDRAM chip is 82mm2. It is built with eight prefetches and eight banks.

Comparative analysis- LPDDR2 Vs LPDDR3

Specifications LPDR2 LPDR3
Max data transmission rate per terminal 800 Mbps 1.6 Gbps
Max data transmission for the entire chip 3.2 Gbps 6.4 Gbps
Power supply voltage 1.2V 1.2V
Bus width 32 bits 32 bits
Capacity of SDRAM 2 Gbits 4 Gbits
Process technology 30nm 30nm

From the above table it is clear that Samsung has doubled its maximum data transmission rate per terminal in LPDDR3 without altering its power supply voltage. The width of the inner data bus has been doubled when compared to the earlier LPDDR2 chip. According to Samsung, this new chip will satisfy the increasing demands of high speed mobile DRAMs particularly for high-definition video and 3D games. DRAM manufacturers are concentrating on increasing the number of terminals and also data transmission rate per terminal in order to achieve lower power consumption and higher speed. According to them, higher speed can be achieved by using serial IO and low power consumption can be achieved by introducing Wide IO or 2-channel application.

With this new development, it is clear that speed is something which cannot be limited. Thanks to the technology and to the people behind it. The launch of this new chip is sure to bring back smile on not only smartphone gamers and high definition video enthusiasts but also on all other technical organisations out there!
