The Samsung Galaxy S II’s unprecedented popularity is because it’s a very well executed phone with all of the current crop’s latest advances under one very slim hood. So what are the things that make this device so popular?
Aesthetics
The Samsung’s design is at the very least attractive, its most notable attribute its slim body which is only 8.49mm thick. Amazingly, the phone doesn’t feel weak and in fact is very sturdy – even more amazing is the fact it has a plastic body.
It’s a tidy looking device; the screen is framed with a thin metal bezel and is a nice piece of minimalist design by all accounts. Its one home button is a testament to the iPhone 4’s design though Samsung have pulled off an individual style with a few tweaks.
Power
Samsung’s 1.2GHz dual core Orion chip is a hell of a lot more powerful than the Hummingbird chip in the previous Galaxy S1. This coupled with a powerful GPU and a whole 1GB of RAM means that the new device is capable of dealing with multi tasking, gaming and video play back. It’s also a very quick web browser and leaves older models of Android phones standing in speed tests.
The biggest issue with the new offering is that there is nothing that can really test it on the current Android market and we’ll have to wait for something that the Galaxy S II may struggle with.
Screen
The new 480×800 resolution 4.3in Super-AMOLED is a great screen and really culls any worries of its slightly low resolution when you see it in action. Samsung have really used all their panel knowhow and applied it to this display to ensure it has some of the best colour display on the phone market. Text is clear and films show lovely depth and play clearly and smoothly.
Connectivity
The mix of 1080p playback and a HDMI output for use with larger screens really brings the Galaxy into a place of its own. This and the numerous video and movie hubs means that the Galaxy is a formidable media device with the proper connections.
It’s has fast Wi-Fi, can be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot, has a 3.5mm jack and a mini USB port as well as room for up to 32GB of memory expansion via an SD card.
Camera
The Galaxy’s camera is also a very strong reason to purchase it, it’s a 1080p 8mp snapper and to be honest is one of the best available, maybe only surpassed by the Sony Xperia Arc and 12mp Nokia N8. It has a huge choice digital extras using its software applications and makes the most of the excellent screen and Android 2.3 operating system.
