  • Sharebar

Business Blogging is one of the popular tools for internet marketing. No matter which industry segment you might be looking at, the incredible progress in the field of social media strategy has ensured that you can benefit from having a business blog as part of your marketing toolkit. Statistically, most businesses with selling strategies that have social media and blogging as an integral component have shown greater sales growth than those that do not. On the other hand, it is not uncommon to hear about businesses that have spent heavily on social media marketing but failed to see tangible return on their investment. What is it that sets the social media driven growth stories apart from the tales of dead-ended blogging? What should one keep in mind when deciding whether to blog for business or not?

Just being out there, will not work

Many social media planners believe their work is over after putting a blog up. Well, the blogosphere doesn’t work that way. Blogs that are not backed up with frequent updated content and promoted across multiple channels fall rapidly to the bottom of the pile. Attracting and building up readership takes time and effort, and many media planners avoid mentioning this to their clients. If you are considering blogging for business, be prepared to invest time and resource into concerted content creation and promotion, and to ensure that the quality of your content stands the test of time. There are no magic shortcuts to getting your business blog to drive sales by just being out there.

Content cannot be pulled out of a hat

Content creation is one aspect that most businesses are not prepared for. You will have to find someone, either in your team or from outside it, who will be willing and able to generate high quality content for you. There are number of content writers who can rehash existing content for low cost, but remember, it is a matter of time before your blog readers realize that they are getting just that, rehashed and cheap content. That will be the end of your blog. The most qualified person to create content for your business is you, or someone who holds expertise in your industry segment. With a little training and some disciplined study, you can turn out the best content for your business. Even if you employ a content writer, familiarize yourself with the principles of social media marketing and business blogging techniques so that you can be the single point of quality control for your business blog.

Don’t do it to keep up with the Joneses

A common business blogging blunder is to set up a blog because everyone else in your industry has one. A blog is an organic entity that is visited by human readers who make subjective judgments based on what they find in it. Nobody is really going to judge the merit of your business offering based on whether you have a blog or not. However, if you do have a blog, chances are that they will judge the merits of your product or service based on what they see in your blog. This is precisely why it might sometimes make sense to not have a blog at all rather than have a blog that is obviously there for no good reason other than keeping up with the Joneses.

Blogging for businesses is not all about SEO

As mentioned earlier, blogging is a human endeavor, and one that leads to qualitative judgments and decisions by the readers. There is no SEO that will translate to sales beyond than perhaps advertising banners on your blog itself. SEO is a field that evolves so rapidly that it is difficult for even the best of SEO minds to keep pace. Fortunately, the wide world of search engines takes a little longer to come up to speed, which is what keeps outdated SEO strategies working. However, blogs are created by human being for the human beings, and the reader experience of your business blog is what will ultimately drive your business, not the technical bells and whistles.
